Lucky Colours for the Year of the Rooster 2017

We’ve got roughly three weeks till Lunar New Year descends upon us. Now’s the time to prepare for the upcoming festivities: 买年货 (shopping for CNY goodies), making/buying sticky rice cakes (or if you’re like me, waiting for someone to give them to you >.<), spring cleaning. Oh gosh, the spring cleaning. Somehow we’ve managed to accumulate more stuff over the past year, so it’s time to tap into my inner KonMari and tidy away!

Of course, one of the best parts of celebrating the Lunar New Year is the chance to get all dressed up. While you’re at it, why not incorporate a lucky colour or two (or five)? After all, wishing for good fortune and prosperity is all part of the deal this time of year!

This year, I’ve also added the names of flowers that are supposedly auspicious for the various zodiac signs, because more good luck is always welcome.

Chinese Zodiac Sign: Rat [ 1948 | 1960 | 1972 | 1984 | 1996 | 2008 ]
Lucky Colours: White, Silver, Black, Blue, Red
Lucky Flowers: Lily, African Violet

Couldn’t resist sneaking just a tiny Disney element in there. :p

Chinese Zodiac Sign: Ox [ 1949 | 1961 | 1973 | 1985 | 1997 | 2009 ]
Lucky Colours: Yellow, Beige, Red, Blue, Purple
Lucky Flowers: Evergreen, Peach Blossom

Fun fact #1: the name of the lipstick shade is “Peach Blossom”, hence it’s place in this ensemble. Nothing is random or coincidental here!

Chinese Zodiac Sign: Tiger [ 1950 | 1962 | 1974 | 1986 | 1998 | 2010 ]
Lucky Colours: Black, Blue, Cyan, Green, Grey
Lucky Flower: Cineraria

What is cineraria, you ask? Well, it’s one of the flowers in the picture, but if you want to know more, here’s the Wiki page. You’re welcome.

Chinese Zodiac Sign: Rabbit [ 1939 | 1951 | 1963 | 1975 | 1987 | 1999 ]
Lucky Colours: Cyan, Green, Blue, Pink
Lucky Flower: Snapdragon

With Alice in Wonderland-inspired elements this time.

Chinese Zodiac Sign: Dragon [ 1940 | 1952 | 1964 | 1976 | 1988 | 2000 ]
Lucky Colours: Yellow, Beige, Red, Pink, Gold
Lucky Flowers: Bleeding Heart Vine

Can’t go wrong with red and gold for CNY!

Chinese Zodiac Sign: Snake [ 1941 | 1953 | 1965 | 1977 | 1989 | 2001 ]
Lucky Colours: Cyan, Red, Light Yellow, Black
Lucky Flowers: Orchid, Cactus

Fun fact #2: Primrose yellow is one of the Pantone colours for Spring/Summer 2017. So you can be prosperous AND on trend at the same time.

Chinese Zodiac Sign: Horse [ 1942 | 1954 | 1966 | 1978 | 1990 | 2002 ]
Lucky Colours: Cyan, Red, Brown, Yellow, Purple
Lucky Flowers: Calla Lily, Jasmine, Marigold

One of my favourites – that embroidered blouse is the stuff of my bohemian dreams.

Chinese Zodiac Sign: Goat [ 1943 | 1955 | 1967 | 1979 | 1991 | 2003 ]
Lucky Colours: Red, Yellow, Green, Purple
Lucky Flowers: Carnation, Primrose

Getting Tiana (from The Princess and the Frog) vibes from the dress. Do you expect any less from a Disney addict?

Chinese Zodiac Sign: Monkey [ 1944 | 1956 | 1968 | 1980 | 1992 | 2004 ]
Lucky Colours: Yellow, Beige, White, Gold, Blue
Lucky Flower: Chrysanthemum

I remember that the “Ming Vase”-inspired dress was all the rage for the last couple of CNY celebrations. I wonder whether that trend will persevere, or will it be something else this year?

Chinese Zodiac Sign: Rooster [ 1945 | 1957 | 1969 | 1981 | 1993 | 2005 ]
Lucky Colours: Black, White, Gold, Brown, Yellow
Lucky Flower: Gladiola

Loving the Victorian flair of this outfit.

Chinese Zodiac Sign: Dog [ 1946 | 1958 | 1970 | 1982 | 1994 | 2006 ]
Lucky Colours: Red, Yellow, Beige, Green
Lucky Flowers: Rose, Cymbidium Orchid

Those dog tag earrings are adorable!

Chinese Zodiac Sign: Pig [ 1947 | 1959 | 1971 | 1983 | 1995 | 2007 ]
Lucky Colours: White, Black, Blue, Yellow, Grey
Lucky Flowers: Hydrangea, Marguerite

Yellow and grey is one of my favourite colour combinations. Adding navy blue to the mix only makes it more swoon-worthy.

Lucky colours from and looks created via Polyvore. Last year’s set and the one from the year before, just to see how my aesthetic has changed over the years.

Phew, that was a long post! Thank you for reading all the way to the end, it really means a lot to me. I hope you’ve enjoyed this post as much as I had fun creating it. To be clear, I’m not an expert on Chinese astrology, and I don’t place too much emphasis on good/bad luck. My personal belief is that you should wear whatever you want within reason, live life and be happy.

Once again, thank you for being with me on this journey. A very happy Lunar New Year to you, and all the best in the year ahead. 心想事成, 萬事如意!
